Everyone remembers being young and staying home from school because of a seasonal cold and watching The Wheel of Fortune or The Young and the Restless on television. After three years of the pandemic, many of us have experienced an increased number of sick days because of the coronavirus. So, in these trying times, it’s no wonder that people are looking for comfort and entertainment that will get their minds off the state of the world and the state of their illness. So, let’s see some of the most entertaining shows to watch on a sick day, whether it be on TV or streaming.
When it comes to distraction, especially in a time of illness most people think of comedies. Over the past few years when it comes to comedy one show has been a mainstay on television. Rough course talking about the Adult Swim-produced animated show Rick and Morty. At its peak, there was only one way to go on the Internet being suggested this Rick and Morty character quiz or these are Rick and Morty T-shirts wherever you want. Despite recent scandals centered around Justin Roiland’s personal life the show will continue in production now helmed by Dan Harmon of Parks and Recs and Community fame.
Topping the Netflix charts recently this of course the series adaptation of the Grisha verse books, Shadow and Bone. this steampunk fantasy series is a little bit of everything for everyone maybe a young adult a full adult or even a teenager. Would be a lot of action romance and of course impressive special effects on the show all to keep your mind off your sickness and entertain you. Be great on the merit of its story it is also an incredibly inclusive show that boasts a wide variety of plot lines of all genres. It is one of the most recent shows that also depicts queer love in a pure and caring way. The show has recently seen a release of this second season and has been now confirmed for a third season and a spin-off. So if you become a fan of this show you will have a lot of things to look forward to.
It has now become quite a meme online to talk about HBO’s legendary series The Sopranos starring John Gandolfini. Despite this show depicting awful people doing awful things he has become quite a staple and moved queer discourse online. the LGBT community and Generation Z finally discovered this mafia-themed epic that made waves in 2000. despite the passing of many of its stars the show managed to remain one of the most acclaimed series of all time. Unlike Game of Thrones, this show managed to maintain its prestige status. Well, it is not an exactly easy show it is watched easily as it is masterfully crafted.
Despite a few dud seasons released much later after its first run, The X-Files remain one of the most iconic shows to ever run out. With David Duchovny starring as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson portraying the gorgeous yet badass Dana Scully, this show is managed to leave a permanent print in our popular culture. On some of the myth arc episodes I’ve not exactly aged well, but many of the self-contained episodes remain incredibly entertaining mysteries that can be revisited over and over. It’s not surprising that binging the X-Files has become a tradition for many millennials who miss the comfort of 1990s television. To this day it still holds up for the most part.
As you can see the selection of available shows for your viewing is wildly varied whether it be recent or old shows or maybe cartoons or live-action dramas. With the number of streaming platforms available, you can certainly find something to distract you on Prime Video, Netflix, or Hulu. Though there is a rising concern when it comes to television conservation as we saw HBO Max completely remove shows from their platform which have no physical release. This is concerning for you if you are a viewer but it is even more so traumatizing if you are a worker in that industry seeing your hard work vaporized by corporate investors. We can only hope to see a better effort to conserve shows in the future.
